Heritage Under the Hoops
This year, we have prepared a themed exhibition titled Heritage Under the Hoops, which will be on display from 26 September until the end of October 2025 in the courtyard of the Tabor Sports Association in Ljubljana.
An accompanying programme with engaging interactive multimedia content can be found in the foyer of the main hall.
Modern basketball began as the result of thought and ingenuity by Canadian-American physical education professor James Naismith, who sought a suitable form of recreation for his students and young people in general during the cold winter months. It was in the winter of 1891–1892 that he designed a new game, which he modestly named Basket Ball. The concept was simple: two teams competed to score points by trying to throw a ball into a basket – initially, actual peach baskets were used. Even the first written rules laid the foundations for the game as we know it today: mandatory passing between teammates and the prohibition of physical contact to avoid unnecessary injuries.
Over time, the game evolved, rules were adjusted, and basketball spread across the world. By the end of the 19th century, it had already made its way to Europe, brought by travellers, sports enthusiasts, and members of the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association). Later on, American soldiers played an important role in its establishment on the European continent.
The story, history, and heritage of basketball in Slovenia are an important part of both European and global basketball. The Heritage Under the Hoop exhibition sheds light on the Slovenian chapter, offering visitors a brief journey through decades of basketball legacy in our country. Photographs, documents, and objects present the diversity of basketball and attempt to highlight all aspects that make the sport so fascinating.
A Slovenian proverb says: “From small beginnings come great things.” This certainly holds true for Slovenian basketball – a sports story born from dedicated, hard work with young people and persistent organisation at various levels, growing into something that reaches far beyond our national borders.
