The beginnings of Slovenian sport
On 18 September 2023, at the invitation of the Slavic Library, the Sports Museum prepared a lecture The Beginnings of Slovenian Sport with a Ph.D. in Historical Sciences, the head of the Sports Museum Unit and senior curator Aleš Šafarič.
This year marks 160 years since the establishment of the Southern Sokol Gymnastic Society, which can be considered the beginning of organized physical activity of Slovenians. We will present the development of Sokol and Orli societz and outline what happened to sports activities in Slovenia from the end of the 19th century to the Second World War.
The lecture will present various directions of development of organized physical exercise. Today, the term sport has become established for all, while during the period under consideration the field is divided into gymnastics (physical education), mountaineering and sports. The emphasis will be on the development of the Sokol and Orli, including their mutual relationship, while sports will be outlined on shorter, with individual emphasis on the example of Ljubljana. TheSports Museum will also be presented and a call to donate material to the museum collection will be expressed.
